Good morning,
My name is Guy Jacques and I am an active duty service member in the United States Navy. I have my bachelor degree and is interested in the Chaplaincy program. I serve onboard the USS Mount Whitney as an LPO in the communications department and have held the command Lay Leader position for two years. I have 6 years on my contract and would like to know what I can do while still on active duty, to become a Chaplain. How many Credits (minimum) do I need to have in a masters degree program in divinity to be eligible for chaplaincy? There is a one year degree program at Liberty University which will permit me to complete all major chaplaincy course. If I enroll in this program, will that suffice? Also, what would be the minimum credits needed to start as an O-3 if I were to persue a higher level degree?
Greetings Petty Officer Jacques. Thanks for your inquiry. Before advising you on total graduate level credits for commissioning as a chaplain corps officer, we need to know the religious faith group that you anticipate would endorse you for chaplaincy. We also encourage you to visit the webpage of the National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces: http://www.ncmaf.org This organization provides a central access for all sorts of policy questions and changes related to accession of chaplains. Blessings for your service as well as your sense of call to ministry as a chaplain. Chaplain Gary Pollitt, MCA Executive Director
