Lt. Col. Brian Koyn, the 82nd Airborne Division chaplain, speaks at the Capt. Ignatius Maternowski Ceremony in Gueutteville, France June 8, 2019. Maternowski was a Franciscan Friar with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. After jumping in near Picauville during D-Day, Maternowski set up a makeshift aid station in Gueutteville between the Germans and Americans. Taking off his helmet and carrying a white flag to a German aid station to look for A doctor, Maternowski made an agreement with the Germans to combine aid stations to support the care of Soldiers on both sides. During a return trip to the American aid station, Maternowski was shot and killed by a German sniper.
The church service in Sainte Mere Eglise. Col. Brian Koyn, 82nd Airborne Division chaplain spoke to the crowd inside the church. This event took place on June 6, 2019. More than 1,300 U.S. Service Members partnered with 950 troops from across Europe and Canada have converged in northwestern France to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the WWII Allied Invasion of Normandy, commonly known as D-Day. Upwards of 80 ceremonies in 40 French communities in the region will take place between June 1-9, 2019, the apex being held June 6th at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mere.
